Our Third Grade Curriculum--Review

I thought it would be nice to do a little review of what we are using for third grade this year and why we like these products.

Oak Meadow Grade 3 (1999 syllabus)

This is our main guide for the year, I use it as a jumping off point and a road map as far as what we want to cover.  We also enjoy the stories and project ideas that are included in the book.  I really like this version of the syllabus and it is full of ideas and what to cover when over the course of the year.

Rod and Staff Math 2/3

I have found Rod and Staff math to be very thorough.  There is tons of review in these books and we only cover about 1/4 to 1/2 of the problems in any lesson but it is more than enough.  With Singapore we always kept hitting learning walls and had to go and dig up something else to use until we were ready to move on.  With Rod and Staff we don't have that problem.

Marsha's Lesson Blocks

Marsha runs Shining Start School up in Washington State and has a yahoogroup for serious Waldorf enthusiasts.  And she also has a wonderful file section that is filled with great ideas and lesson blocks for grades 2 and 3 especially.  We are using her lesson blocks that incorporate Folk Tales since that is one of the things that they are supposed to cover in Oak Meadow 3.  I like her tales a lot.

Scott Foresman Language Arts

We are using these free online workbooks for grammar and writing.  She will be finishing up the grade 1 and working on grade 2 this year.  These books are good and easy to use.

Macmillian McGraw-Hill Phonics and Spelling

We are also using these free online workbooks for phonics and spelling practice.  The grade 1 books are a great review for her and she is remembering more and more.

Also in her line-up this year are various lapbooks, easy readers and fun projects.  I think she will enjoy herself and all that we do and learn over the course of 2011.
