Fifth Grade Language Arts Plan

Oak Meadow has a strong language arts program but my daughter is behind in writing. So I am adapting things this year and helping her to catch up. So that by the time she gets to Oak Meadow 6 she will be able to keep up with all the work.

Here is my plan:

Week 1--finishing up Ruth Heller's book on verbs. OM5 lesson on capital letters and making a writing web about rabbits.

Week 2--Types of sentences and OM material on nouns, verbs as well as taking notes and making an outline.

Week 3--Capital letter study I, sentences, names and days. Begin writing sentences and forming paragraphs for paper on rabbits.

Week 4--Capitals months, titles, place names and holidays. OM syllables and finishing rabbit paper.

Week 5--Capitals letters, books & punctuation periods and quotes. OM material on types of sentences.

Week 6--Apostrophe with possession and contractions, commas and commas in a list. The book Eats, Shoots and Leaves. OM material on verbs, plurals and outline a short story to write.

Week 7--Commas with quotes, dates and addresses. Exclamation and question marks. Write a short story that includes dialogue.

Week 8--OM material on prefixes. Ruth Heller's book on adverbs.

Week 9--Copy "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere." More adverb information.

Week 10--Suffix work. More adverbs.

Week 11--Plurals and parsing sentence work. Finish up adverbs.

Week 12--Plurals, prepositions and sentence identification. Ruth Heller's book on prepositions.

Week 13--Apostrophe work. Finish prepositions.

Week 14--Plurals. Ruth Heller's books on conjunctions and interjections.

Week 15--Continue with OM material from last week. Finish last week's book.

Week 16--Verb work. Ruth Heller's book on pronouns.

Week 17--Review work. Finish the book on pronouns.

Week 18--Verbs, adverbs, homophones and writing web. Sentence Analysis with Cultivating Dharma Language Album. We will just follow the flow of activities.

Week 19--Homophones, outline, writing and finishing paper.

Week 20--Apostrophe and homophones.

Week 21--Antonyms.

Week 22--Writing paragraphs.

Week 23--Writing paragraphs.

Week 24--Review work.

Week 25--Writing a letters for trip project.

Week 26--Antonyms.

Week 27--plurals

Week 28--Writing trip journal

Week 29--Trip journal

Week 30--Trip journal

Week 40--Finish trip journal.

There are about 10 more weeks and we will figure it out then. Most of this is tentative but we are going to try to start doing more of the Oak Meadow work in Language arts. I think that it is a good solid program and once my daughter has more confidence in her writing skills it should work out fine. What do you think?

Wow, I'm impressed with your planning. Looks like a good plan. I've only recently discovered Oak Meadow. I have a borrowed copy of the sixth grade LA, and I love the way it works with history and blends the grammar in with writing. Keep us updated on how your plan works out.
