Balancing Oak Meadow 2 and 5

After starting some of the lessons this week, I have been able to analyze the curriculum more closely and work out a plan on how to balance two grades and get everything done in a reasonable amount of time.

First, to make things less stressful on my fourth grader we are going to do daily blocks with her. She will do Life of Fred math on Monday and Wednesday. On Tuesdays, she will do history and on Thursdays science.

Our daily routine is moving toward this:

1. reading with second grader while fourth grader reads alone
2. phonics work with 2nd
3. math with 2nd while 4th works on math review work
4. lapbook pieces
5. Read alouds for 2nd, 5th and our Lemony Snickett book
6. dismiss 2nd
7. spelling
8. grammar
9. either Life of Fred, history or science lesson

We will run a trial of this schedule next week and see how it goes. We tried doing a little of each subject this week and it overwhelmed her. I think it will take us about 2 hours to do all the work well.
