Looking at Possible Subject Blocks for Spring Semester

I always like to type up my ideas and share them here. Some of the ideas we use and some we don't use. Actually, this blog is a part of my troubleshooting and brainstorming process where I can write down my thoughts. So I've been thinking about spring semester and what we are going to do for subject blocks.

I know that each month I want to spend 1 week each on history, science, grammar/composition and the other 1-2 weeks will be children's choice.

For language arts the topics I would like to cover include:

verbs
punctuation, sentence types and writing sentences
adverbs
pronouns
prepositions, conjunctions and interjections

For history/science:

creation/beginning of the world and the science involved
dinosaurs
the ice age
Mesopotamia
Old Testament stories
ancient Egypt

For just science:
horses
rabbits
and basically what they are interested in

For the children's choice weeks, I want to let them choose if they want to do music, work in a certain art medium, study an artist, do a literature lapbook, follow a rabbit trail from history or whatever they are interested in.

What do you think?

I like your history and science blocks, but for history, you may find that you have a lot more there than 1 week per month. You didn't mention math...is this something you do every day?

I actually prefer language arts to be more about the literature, with the grammar just coming off of that, but it's good to have a list of what you want to cover. For us, though, I will always have a "great book" going rather than limit that to the children's choice week once a month. Unless you just meant that they could choose to do a lapbook on whatever you happen to be reading at the time?

Do you like having the blocks? I think this would be too limiting for us. Of course, that's the great thing about homeschooling...you get to do what works for you!

We do a read aloud, reading, spelling and math every day. The blocks have been quite freeing and enable us to dig deeper into a subject. In the past we have done up to 7 or 8 subject per day and most of them we just did short intense Charlotte Mason style lessons but I felt things were lacking and that we just rushed through things.

The blocks are more of a time where we delve into things. And the blocks can last from 1-4 weeks. I wanted to work on a grammar skill each month and a bit of history each month but the rest I really just wanted to leave free.
