History: The Victorians

We will finish up our Time Traveler unit on the early 19th century next week. But where will we go after that?

The next logical unit would be on the Civil War but my children are really not ready for that. the Time Traveler unit covered wagon trains, the west, pioneer and such. So we decided that we want to do something about the Eastern United States during the Victorian period.

What are we going to do?

I have a book called: What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge. It is a series of 3 books including What Katy Did at School and What Katy Did Next. Katy is a bit of a rough and tumble child who grows up to be a well-mannered young lady.

So we are going to do a unit on the first book and I am going to create a unit study and lapbook to go with it that I hope will be on homeschoolshare. Right now I am just going through the chapters and looking for ideas on things to do with each chapter. There are so many great rabbit trails with this book.

There are 13 chapters and they are filled with lively fun. Some rabbit trails we might explore include:

how to sew a seam
post office game
marshes
Victorian food
Victorian schools
making a Sunday newspaper
friends and friendship

And that's just through chapter 6. So I am off to working on the unit study and lapbook. I have a couple of weeks to work on it. Hope your history studies are going well.
