Making Montessori--Teens and Tens

My youngest is working on the numbers 11 to 20 and addition within 20 this week. Mostly the work in Singapore has been on creating teen numbers by adding a number to 10. This goes great with the Montessori bead and teen board activities.

You can find the material to make the teen board here:

http://www.montessorimaterials.org/math.htm You can page down to the ten and teen board pdfs. I took mine and attached them to a file-folder and put the numbers in a little envelope for safe storage. The ten and teen boards fold up nicely if you tape them together at the end.

For how to do the beads, look here for instructions:

http://www.montessorimom.com/short-bead-stair/ I used pony beads and pipe cleaners because that is what I had on hand. I will try to put up pictures tomorrow.

For how to use them, here are some more links:

http://www.ehow.com/video_4403345_teen-bead-board-montessori-materials.html This is a short video where a Montessori teacher demonstrates how to use the board for teaching teen numbers.

http://www.infomontessori.com/mathematics/skip-and-counting-teens-quantity.htm This is a lesson from an math album on working with the concept of quantity of teen numbers.

http://www.infomontessori.com/mathematics/skip-and-counting-teens-symbol.htm This part is the same as the video but tells you what you are doing to show the symbols for the teen numbers.

http://www.infomontessori.com/mathematics/skip-and-counting-tens-association.htm This lesson is for the tens board.

I hope this helps with lessons for counting beyond ten.

We started off with Cuisenaire Rods, but they didn't last long. My son turned out to have quite a head for math.

If only there was a way to magically transform him into a reader now! LOL

It sounds like yours days are going well.
