Discovery Boxes

One of my early influences for homeschooling was unschooling and the idea that if you leave learning tools around all the time that they children will just learn naturally. One thing that I did to encourage natural learning was to make discovery boxes.

What are discovery boxes?

I took plastic pencil boxes and filled them with interesting things.

What's in the the boxes?

Shells, fossils, arrowheads, postcards from around the world, money from around the world, beads, rocks, dead bugs, etc.

I find that they are nice to bring out when we are working on a particular topic or to just let the children explore on their own.
