8-22-08 Weekly Report

This week we went to a science fair. My oldest did an interactive display on magnets. There was about ten children in all who did projects and each one was on something different. There was the human body, tornadoes, liquids, volcano, insect and even a display about boats and wind. It was a wonderful experience for all the children.

Literature--Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?
Lapbook--clothes, the letter B and it's sounds
Math--red, matching objects that are the same

My preschoolers mom was very happy with the lapbook we sent home. Here is a link to the lapbook:

1st grade

Subtraction--we started this with the story from this site: We used our gemstones and gnomes to tell the story and then we worked in Singapore Earlybird 2b using the gemstones to help make the problems physical.

Phonograms i and y--we learned about the sounds for these through stories and pictures and then worked on some worksheets from this site:

Dinosaurs is the topic for this and next week and she worked on the first few books of her lapbook from this site:

She also read a couple of Hooked on Phonics and Bob books.

3rd Grade

Math--Singapore Math 3a finished up the unit on money and the workbook for 3a. Next week she will move onto 3b. Yeah!

Spelling--Working on WISE list F. I am looking hard at Spelling Power and using what I know of phonograms and the rules to teach spelling but using the Spelling Power lists and activities.

Grammar--We started using Visually Language Arts 3 this week with the Ruth Heller book: Merry-Go-Round which is all about nouns.

History--She listened to the passages in Story of the World 2 about Queen Elizabeth I.

Project--The history of Ice Cream, we started working on this lapbook. You can find it here:

We had a great week. On Tuesday and Friday we had all day park days. Tuesday was due to food co-op day and Friday we planned out this fall's Friday Fun Club events.

Sounds like you have a nice approach! I just may look up that ice cream lapbook. That sounds like fun. I'm impressed your third grader is already in 3B. Watch out for long division!
