Our May/June Unit

I am now back from vacation and will be posting pictures and commentary later on our trip to Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. We are currently in the midst of a two week break and will start again on Monday with our May/June units. With these units we will be gearing up for first and third grade.

Gearing up for First:

Addition within 8, 9, and 10. We will be making addition ladders and may make some addition rainbows for number bonds with numbers under 10. She will be working in Rod and Staff but doing a few pages in Singapore Earlybird as well.

Phonics will be mainly working her way through lessons 16 through 23 in unit 1 of Rod and Staff Reading 1. In June she will finish up unit 1 and the alphabet. Things will be geared up in August.

Penmanship will be writing numbers and letters. We may move beyond writing words into sentence work.

Gearing up for Third:

Phonograms ie, ei, dge, eigh, si, ci and ti. We will take a look at these and their sounds. In July she will take a break from phonics and then start up with the WISE guide spelling lists in August.

History will cover from the War of the Roses to Africa's happenings at this point in time.

Math will be the seven, eight, and nine tables with further practice in word problems, multiplication with regrouping and long division.

Latin will cover chapter five of Minimus. We will learn more about the differences between Britons and Romans of the time.

Science will focus on changes in the state of matter.

It looks like it will be a good four weeks in which we will tie up any loose ends from the end of second grade and start gearing up the workload. It should be a good summer with morning school and afternoon pool time.
