Deer Hunting with Jesus--A Book Review

Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class War by Joe Bageant is a book that explains who the white American working class is, what they believe and why they believe it. This book could have been written by my father but it was written by a man who grew up on the other side of Appalachia over in more educated Virginia.

This book is worth reading especially if you want to know the distinctions between working class and poor white trash. It also really gets into explaining the chains that keep my people from being more than slaves to the system. Basically, when you start out with nothing in life then survival is often more important than education and without education you can not move onto the next level.

So much of what he writes in this book is so true and I see it every day around me in the small city I currently live in because it is these people who were transported out of Kentucky mid-century to work in the factories. Factory work is hard soul-killing work and when you are too old for the factory only death in poverty awaits you.

Good book--a worthy read.
