The Story Of Clocks and Calendars: Marking of a Mellennium by Betsy Maestro

We have been reading about Julius and Augustus Caesar and this book was on the recommended list. My oldest loved this book and it has a great deal of interesting information in it. It starts out as a general time book but then it gets very in-depth.

It talks about the difference between lunar and solar calendars. Astrology is briefly touched upon. The Roman calendar is explained as is the origin of the names for the months and days of the week. It also explains how the current form of our calendar the Gregorian calendar came to be.

There is also a special section on clocks. It explains early clocks and how they worked and then how they have evolved to be what clocks are like today.

This is a great book that is full of information for a child who wants to learn about the history of time-keeping.
